Overlooked by Collectors
In 1926, the last private coil company, Schermack, ordered 1 ½¢ imperforate sheets. However, a printing error occurred when the stamp, intended for flat plate presses, was mistakenly produced on a rotary press instead. The spacing between the panes did not meet Schermack's standards, leading to the stamps being returned.
As a result, U.S. #631 was never distributed to post offices and could only be purchased through the Philatelic Agency in Washington, D.C. This limited availability led to its oversight by many collectors at the time. Today, it is a prized item among collectors due to its scarcity and unique production history.
